Pioneering Data Science & AI Academy in Retail
In a groundbreaking move, Marks and Spencer (M&S) has launched the world’s first Data Science & AI Academy in retail. This Level 7 apprenticeship program forms the latest chapter in M&S’s ambitious digital transformation strategy.
A Milestone in the Marks and Spencer Digital Journey
“Since 2018 we’ve been on an all-encompassing journey to transform our business and make M&S special again,” says Suzanne Howse, Head of Enterprise Data at Marks and Spencer. The academy marks another giant leap in the company’s quest to become a digital-first retailer. The aim? To put data at the heart of its decision-making process.
Unveiling the Features of the New Apprenticeship Program
Developed in collaboration with leading education provider Cambridge Spark, the program will initially onboard a cohort of 10 colleagues. Over the next 15 months, these apprentices will learn cutting-edge data science techniques in areas such as machine learning, modeling, and automating & optimizing business processes.
The Financial and Strategic Value of Data-Driven Decisions
“This is something we forecast to be worth millions to our business; value we previously could only dream of unlocking,” Howse explains.
The academy exemplifies M&S’s commitment to staying ahead of its competitors by leveraging data-driven AI solutions.
Fostering Future Talent and Looking Ahead
According to Howse, the academy will help M&S “attract and retain talent,” given that the esteemed Level 7 program isn’t available at any other retailers. This positions M&S as a hub for career development in data science within the retail industry.
