London Tech Week: Spotlight on AI in Education
Marking the 10th anniversary of London Tech Week, the role of AI in education took center stage. Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, has brought the transformative potential of AI in education under the spotlight. During her address, she launched a new government initiative that seeks to understand the opportunities and challenges AI brings in educational settings.
“Artificial intelligence is going to transform the world around us and help grow the economy. The workforces that are best equipped with the skills and knowledge they need will be the ones that ride the wave. We must make sure education is one of them,” stated Keegan.
London Tech Week: A Call for Evidence on AI’s Impact
The initiative, unveiled during London Tech Week, aims to gather evidence from education professionals across all levels, including schools, colleges, universities, and the early years sector. The collected insights will help understand the benefits of AI, as well as the risks it could potentially pose.
“That’s why we want to kick start a conversation with experts from across education and technology to hear their views and learn from their experiences. This will help us make the right decisions to get the best out of generative AI in a safe and secure way,” Keegan added.
Generative AI Tools: The New Classroom Assistants
Debuting at London Tech Week, AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Bard were highlighted as transformative elements in UK classrooms. These AI-based learning tools are enhancing the teaching and learning processes, but also bring with them a wealth of untapped potential.
The initiative also addresses the implications of AI misuse, including concerns over essay bots and cheating in exams. Keegan emphasized the need to get ahead of these risks and ensure a safe, ethical, and effective use of AI in education.
Addressing Misuse: Preventing AI-facilitated Cheating
While AI has immense potential in enhancing education, it also opens up avenues for misuse. AI-enabled cheating and misuse of essay bots are real concerns that the educational sector needs to address. The call to evidence marks a starting point to understand and tackle these issues.
Embracing the Digital Skills Boost: DFSQs and the New Taskforce
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan also unveiled new Digital Functional Skills Qualifications (DFSQs) courses set to commence in September. It’s part of a broader digital skills boost aimed at equipping the workforce for the future.
Additionally, the launch of a new Digital and Computing Skills Education Taskforce will assess the current and future needs of computing and digital skills. The Taskforce will work closely with industry experts to promote careers in key sectors such as cyber security, AI, or computing.
Ensuring Access and Mitigating Digital Poverty
Julian David, CEO of techUK, voiced his support for the new initiative, emphasizing the need to end digital poverty.
“AI promises to be one of the most impactful technologies of our lifetimes, and the UK is well positioned to be one of the leading countries unlocking the opportunities of this technology,” he said.
Looking Ahead: AI and the Digitally Savvy Workforce
As AI continues to make waves in the education sector, the call for evidence could shape the trajectory of its use. The goal is to support students, teachers, and educational institutions to leverage AI to their advantage, prepare for an increasingly digital workforce, and ultimately transform the educational landscape for the better.
Chris Goodall, Deputy Headteacher at Epsom and Ewell High School, welcomed the initiative, saying,
“We believe that AI technologies have the potential to transform teaching and learning, helping teachers to manage their workloads effectively while enhancing student outcomes.“
As we mark the 10th anniversary of London Tech Week, there’s no better time to reflect on the significant role of AI in education. With ongoing research and discussions, we’ll continue to uncover the potential of AI in shaping the future of education.
