In the highly competitive arena of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Apple is reportedly developing its own tools, preparing to compete with established generative AI players like OpenAI and Google. According to a report by noted Apple leaker Mark Gurman, Apple’s AI development is quietly progressing, yet the company is still formulating a clear strategy for the technology’s consumer release.

Gurman’s sources reveal Apple has built its own framework, called “Ajax,” for creating large language models (LLMs), the AI-based systems central to the likes of ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. This internal Apple framework has reportedly led to the development of a chatbot, tentatively referred to as “Apple GPT”.

Apple Mysterious AI Development: ‘Ajax’

The “Ajax” framework appears to be Apple’s starting point in this AI race. It’s the foundation upon which a small team of Apple engineers have built their own AI, a prototype affectionately named by some insiders as “Apple GPT”. Currently, access to this chatbot is limited within Apple, with a broader reveal yet to be scheduled.

The Silent Contender: Apple GPT

This reported AI development marks a significant shift in Apple’s approach to AI. Bloomberg suggests some Apple staffers expect a major AI announcement next year, indicating the company’s increasing interest in integrating AI technologies into its future products.

AI and Machine Learning: Apple’s Terminology Puzzle

Interestingly, Apple seldom uses the term “artificial intelligence.” The company often opts for the more academic term, “machine learning.” For instance, with the recently unveiled Vision Pro headset, Apple referred to the augmented reality concept as “spatial computing”. This language nuance has prompted much discussion about Apple’s perspective on AI and its application.

Apple Plays Catch-up Game in AI Technology

Despite its innovative reputation, Apple appears to be late to the AI party. It has used machine learning in various products, including Siri speech recognition, and the Photos app’s ability to detect faces and pets. However, other tech giants like Microsoft and Google have already integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard respectively into their software suites.

This week, Qualcomm also announced its intention to work with Meta to make its LLMs work directly on Android devices, instead of on far-away servers in the cloud. Apple, it seems, has some catching up to do.

Apple GPT: A ripple in the AI Sea?

As Apple delves deeper into the world of AI, it will be interesting to see how the tech giant will differentiate itself within the AI landscape and compete with the existing AI powerhouses. Will the company’s entry make waves or just a ripple in the AI sea?

What do you think about Apple’s reported AI development? How will it change the current AI landscape? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. We would love to hear from you!
